The rod, often called a safety antenna, stands up from the front of the bike so that kite string (dor) stretched across the road meets the rod before it meets the rider. String is the biggest danger on Lahore's roads during Basant because it hangs at neck height and is almost invisible against the sky, which is why officials call motorcyclists the most vulnerable people during the festival.
Where can you get a safety rod fitted for free?
Lahore traffic police plan to fit rods free of cost on more than 2,000,000 motorcycles before Basant 2027, as they did at road-safety camps across the city in 2026.

Basant 2026 reference: traffic police fitted safety rods free of charge at road-safety camps across Lahore, the commissioner said no motorcycle would be allowed on Lahore's roads without one during the festival, riding without a rod carried a Rs 2,000 fine, and motorcycles without rods were kept out of red zones.

Watch the traffic police's announcements for this year's camp locations, and get the rod fitted early instead of queueing in festival week. A good rod is firmly bolted at the front, stands at least 1 metre high and doesn't wobble when you push it. Check it before every ride during the festival, because a loose rod gives no protection.
Do you need a neck guard as well as a rod?
Yes, wear one: the rod catches string across the road, but string can still drop from above or come in from the side.
- Neck guard: a padded or cut-resistant collar that covers the whole neck, worn over your clothes.
- Helmet: a full-face helmet with the visor down protects your face and eyes; an open one leaves both exposed.
- No guard? A high collar or a thick scarf wrapped snugly is far better than a bare neck.
- Gloves: so you can push string away without cutting your hands.
How should you ride in Lahore during Basant?
Slowly and alertly, watching for string at neck height, especially on bridges, flyovers and roads lined with rooftops.

- Slow down in kite-flying neighbourhoods: the slower you ride, the less force string has if it catches you.
- Watch for string across the road at neck height, especially on flyovers, bridges and underpasses, and at dusk when it is hardest to see.
- Never chase a cut kite (bo kata) through traffic, and never stop under a kite fight to watch.
- Keep your lights working for evening rides, and give people looking up at the sky extra room.
- Leave the bike at home on the busiest flying days if you can; in 2026, public transport was made free during the festival for exactly that reason.
Basant 2026 reference: travel was free on Lahore's Metro Bus, Orange Line, Speedo and electric buses during the festival, with extra free rides on set routes, so that people could leave their motorcycles at home. Arrangements for 2027 have not been announced.

Is it safe to ride at night during Basant?
Only with extra care: string is even harder to see after dark, so ride slower and make sure you can see and be seen.
- Drop your speed further in flying areas after sunset, when string disappears against the dark sky.
- Keep your headlight clean and working, and dip it for oncoming traffic.
- Slow down if a rooftop flood light pointed at the street dazzles you.
Should children ride on motorcycles during Basant?
Avoid it if you can: take children by car, rickshaw or public transport on flying days, and if they must ride, cover their neck and go slowly.

In 2026 the Lahore administration barred under-18s from flying kites, and the 2027 notification is expected to do the same. Parents, guardians and event organisers are legally responsible for children's safety; offences by minors go through the Juvenile Justice System Act 2018, and unpaid fines can be recovered from parents or guardians.

- Keep them holding on and facing forward, not leaning out to look at kites.
- Ride slower than usual, and stop if you see string across the road.

- Wear a neck guard, a high collar or a thick scarf, just like the rider.
- Hold on and sit still; don't lean out or look up at kites while the bike is moving.
- Tuck in dupattas, shawls and scarf ends so they can't trail into the wheel or chain.
- If you spot string ahead, tell the rider early so there is time to slow down.
What should you do if kite string catches you on a motorcycle?
Brake gently, stop at the side of the road and lift or cut the string away rather than pulling it across your skin, then call Rescue 1122 if you are cut.
Brake gently
Ease off and brake smoothly instead of swerving into traffic.
Stop safely
Pull over to the side of the road and switch off before you touch the string.
Don't pull
Lift the string off your neck or face with a gloved hand, or cut it, instead of dragging it across your skin.
Treat any cut
Press a clean cloth firmly on a cut and keep pressing. For any neck wound, call Rescue 1122 straight away.
Report it
Banned glass-coated or metallic string should be reported to the police on 15, with the place and time.
