How to check the QR code on a pinna before you buy

Scan the QR code on a pinna with your phone camera before you pay. A legal pinna's code opens a record on an official Punjab government (.gov.pk) portal naming the registered manufacturer. No code, a code that will not scan, or a link to any other site means do not buy.

What is the QR code on a pinna?

A unique code on every legal pinna that links the string to the registered manufacturer who made it.

The code is the backbone of the traceability system: manufacturer to seller to buyer. Registered sellers record which codes they sell, so a pinna found on a rooftop can be traced back to where it came from. String without a working code has no place in that chain, which is why it is treated as illegal.

How do you check a pinna's QR code?

Scan the code with your phone camera and confirm it opens an official Punjab government page that names a registered manufacturer.

  1. Find the label

Look for the printed QR label on the pinna itself, not on a bag or a loose card.

  2. Scan it

Open your phone camera or Google Lens and point it at the code. No special app is needed.

  3. Check the web address

Before you read anything, check the address bar: it should be an https address ending in .gov.pk.

  4. Match the details

The page should name a registered manufacturer. Compare it with any name or number printed on the label or your receipt.

  5. Keep proof

Take a screenshot of the result, and keep it with your receipt until Basant is over.

What does a valid result look like?

A secure page on an official .gov.pk address that shows the manufacturer's name and registration details matching the pinna.

The exact layout of the 2027 portal is not public yet. When it goes live, we will add a screenshot of a valid result here so you know exactly what to expect.

What are the warning signs of a fake QR code?

No code, a sticker pasted over another code, a link to a social media page or any non-government website, or a manufacturer name that doesn't match.

  • The pinna has no code, or the seller offers to 'add it later'.
  • The code is on a loose sticker or tag that could have come from another pinna.
  • Scanning opens WhatsApp, a social media page, a shortened link or any site that does not end in .gov.pk.
  • The page loads, but the manufacturer name differs from the label or receipt.
  • Several pinnas in the same batch show the exact same code.

What should you do if the code fails?

Don't buy the pinna, note the seller's name and location, and report it to the police helpline 15.

Selling string outside the registered system is an offence: 1 to 5 years in prison for selling without registration, and 5 to 7 years if the string is a banned type. Don't argue with the seller; walk away and report it.

How will we handle QR codes in our shop?

We will log the QR code of every pinna we receive and record the order it goes to, so any pinna we sell can be traced end to end.

Each pinna will be scanned in when it arrives from the manufacturer and scanned out against your order, and your receipt will list the codes you bought. You can scan them yourself when you collect your order at our shop, before you sign for it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an app to scan a pinna's QR code?

No. Your phone camera or Google Lens is enough.

Is string without a QR code legal?

No. Only cotton dor is allowed: at most 9 threads (tars), at least 28 count, coated only with approved maanjha, and wound in a round ball called a pinna. Every pinna must carry its own QR code for verification.

Do kites need a QR code too?

The official safety rules require a QR code on every pinna of string. Buy kites only from a registered seller, and check any label or code they carry the same way.

What if the QR code opens a website that isn't .gov.pk?

Treat the pinna as illegal. Don't buy it, and report the seller to the police helpline 15.
