How to balance a kite that spins, dives or leans

A kite that spins, dives or leans is out of balance. Check that the spine (dhadda) is straight and the bow (kaman) flexes evenly, slide the kanni loop toward the tail to calm it, add a small weight to the lighter wingtip, or tape on a temporary tail. Test-fly only on notified Basant days.

Basant 2027 dates still await a Deputy Commissioner notification. The official Basant portal and the Punjab government's latest announcement (30 September 2026) give 29 January to 7 February 2027, excluding 5 February for Kashmir Day. These replaced the 12–14 March 2027 dates announced in August, which the portal's code of conduct still lists as tentative; a return to March was reported on 4 October 2026 but has not been notified.

Why does a kite spin, dive or lean to one side?

A kite that keeps spinning or diving usually has its tie point too close to the nose or is tail-heavy; one that leans to one side has a heavier wing or an uneven bow.

In Urdu, a kite that leans like this kanni khati hai. Fix the frame first, then the kanni, then the weight, one change at a time.

How do you check the spine (dhadda) and the bow (kaman)?

Sight along the spine to check it is straight, flex each end of the bow to check both sides bend equally, and look for cracks, splits or loose ties.

  • *Spine (dhadda): Lahore's kite makers, who call it the gaz*, make it perfectly straight, with a slightly thicker upper half for a stable top and a flexible tail. Sight along it for bends and cracks.
  • Supple, not weak: a good spine flexes but does not snap when twisted.
  • *Bow (kaman):* both arms must match in thickness and flex, since a small difference changes that side's weight and bend. Press each wingtip gently to compare.
  • Centre and ties: the bow must cross the spine dead centre, with every tie tight; a small error at the centre is enough to unbalance a kite.

Go gently

Bamboo can snap if you bend it sharply at one spot. Flex it gradually, and replace a cracked stick rather than forcing it straight.

How do you adjust the kanni to stop spinning or diving?

Slide the loop a little toward the tail to steady a kite that spins or dives, or toward the nose to liven one that will not turn, checking after every small move.

Toward the tail, the kite becomes steadier; toward the nose, it turns and spins more easily; at either extreme it may not fly at all. A two-point kanni cannot cure a lean; that needs the wing and bow fixes below.

When should you add a weight or a tail?

Add a small weight to the lighter wingtip when a kite keeps leaning one way, and tape on a temporary tail while you learn or when a kite still spins too readily.

  • Wingtip weight: tape a small strip of paper to the tip of the lighter wing, a little at a time, and recheck on a fingertip. This is the old meaning of kanni bandhna: Urdu dictionaries define it as tying a strip to the lighter side of a kite to even out its weight.
  • The bow first: a kite also drifts toward the side where its bow is weaker, so check the bow before you add weight.
  • Temporary tail: tape a light strip of paper or ribbon to the back of the spine at the tail. It slows the kite and calms the spin; as you gain control, cut off about a third at a time.
  • Built-in tails: the gudda's paper triangle and the patang's paper tassel are not only decoration; kite makers say they also help steady the kite.

How do you repair a torn kite with tissue paper?

Paste a small, thin patch of tissue or kite paper over the tear on the back, let it dry flat, and recheck the balance, because every patch adds weight.

  1. Flatten the tear

Lay the kite face down on a clean table and ease the torn edges back into place.

  2. Cut a thin patch

Use tissue or kite paper a little larger than the tear; thin paper adds the least weight.

  3. Paste lightly

Lahore's kite makers use lei, a paste made from wheat flour, and most paper glues also bond kite paper well. Use as little as you can.

  4. Seal pinholes

Seal pinholes and weak corners with small pieces of paper tape (chaipi) so the wind cannot get in.

  5. Dry and recheck

Let it dry flat, then balance the kite on a fingertip; if the patched side dips, add a matching strip to the other wing.

Keep paper kites dry: tissue paper weakens, and can dissolve, when it gets wet.

How do you test a balanced kite safely and legally?

Do the hang and fingertip checks indoors now, and save test flights for notified Basant days, from a roof with walls at least 3.5 feet high.

The official Basant portal lists 29 January to 7 February 2027, excluding 5 February, but the dates still await a Deputy Commissioner notification. Kite flying anywhere else in Punjab or on any other day is illegal, and in 2026 under-18s were barred from flying. When the days come, test from the middle of the roof, away from the edge.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my patang keep spinning?

The tie point is probably too close to the nose, or the kite is tail-heavy. Slide the kanni loop toward the tail, and add a temporary tail while you learn.

What does kanni khana mean?

It describes a kite that leans or drifts to one side, usually because one wing is heavier or the bow bends unevenly.

What glue should I use to repair a kite?

A light paper glue or a flour paste such as lei, used sparingly on a thin patch of tissue or kite paper.

Can I test-fly my kite before Basant?

No. Flying is legal only in Lahore on the notified festival days: awaiting notification (official portal: 29 Jan – 7 Feb 2027). Do the hang and balance checks indoors until then.
