Rooftop essentials for Basant 2027

A Basant day on a Lahore roof means hours in the open, so plan for shade, cold water, somewhere to sit and light for the stairs. The roof needs walls or grills at least 3.5 feet high and a first-aid kit, and loud music and DJ systems are banned, so we sell no speakers. We plan to stock caps, mats, canopies, sunscreen, power banks, cooler boxes and lights.

Sales open after our Punjab seller certificate is issued. Join the waitlist for launch prices.

What rooftop essentials will we stock for Basant 2027?

Comfort and safety basics for a long day on the roof: caps, floor mats, a shade canopy, sunscreen, power banks, cooler boxes, and flood and torch lights for the evening.

Everything here is chosen for a roof that is busy with flyers and dor (ڈور): low, tied down and out of the way. None of it makes noise, and none of it throws a beam where it shouldn't. Each card shows a drawn kite until we can photograph the real stock.

How do you set up shade without getting in the way of the kites?

Anchor a canopy low and to one side, well away from where kites launch and land, and tie down every corner against gusts.

  • Low and to one side: a tall canopy in the middle of the roof snags lines and blocks the flyers.
  • Tied down: a canopy that lifts in a gust can knock someone off balance near the edge.
  • Clear path: keep the way to the stairs open, so anyone can get down quickly if someone is hurt.

What do you need for a full day in the sun?

A cap, sunscreen, a mat to sit on, and more cold drinking water than you expect, kept in a cooler box in the shade.

  • Caps and sunscreen: you spend hours looking up into an open sky, so reapply sunscreen through the afternoon.
  • Mats: roof concrete gets hot and gritty; a floor mat gives everyone somewhere to sit between flights.
  • Cold water: a cooler box keeps drinks within reach, so nobody runs up and down the stairs in a hurry.

Which lights are safe for flying in the evening?

A flood light pointed straight up and a torch for the stairs and roof edges; never shine a light at roads, neighbours or aircraft.

Kite flying is legal only on the days, and within any hours, the Deputy Commissioner notifies, so lights don't extend the festival. White and yellow kites are easier to follow in a dim sky. We don't sell laser lights: their beams can dazzle pilots and drivers.

What should you leave off the roof?

Speakers and anything else that makes noise, because loud music and DJ systems are banned, and any store of flammable material.

The Punjab Home Department's Basant 2027 directions also require owners to keep electricity wires near rooftops properly protected, ban storing flammable material on rooftops, require safety certificates for lifts during the festival, and make first-aid equipment mandatory at authorised kite-flying locations. LESCO is to fit safety netting to vulnerable installations and clear kites from poles and wires, and the Parks and Horticulture Authority is to remove kites caught in trees. Unsafe or illegal activity can be reported on Emergency Helpline 15.

  • Noise: loud music, DJ systems and noise makers such as the baja (باجا) are banned.
  • Flammable clutter: storing flammable material on a roof is banned, and a busy roof needs every bit of clear floor.
  • Firing: aerial firing and any display of weapons are criminal offences.
  • Anything to climb: don't leave chairs or crates near the munder (منڈیر), where someone could stand on them at the edge.

Why bring a power bank to the roof?

So that at least one phone always has enough charge to call Rescue 1122, with some left over for photos.

A long day of photos and video drains phones fast. Charge the power bank the night before, keep it in the shade with the water, and agree which phone stays charged for emergencies.
