Where can you buy kites in Lahore?

From a seller registered for Basant 2027, during the official sales window; Mochi Gate in the Walled City is the city's best-known market for kites and string.

Selling kites or string is legal only for registered sellers, only in Lahore and only inside the sales window, which is not notified yet (expected about a week before the festival). Sellers are expected to register in January or February 2027. A shop that sells before then, or without a certificate, is breaking the law, and so is the stock it sells.

Mochi Gate, one of the Walled City's old gates, has been Lahore's kite and string bazaar for generations, and in 2026 it was where shortages and price spikes showed first. You will also find registered shops across the city once the window opens. Wherever you buy, the checks below are the same.

How do you check that a kite shop is registered?

Ask to see the seller's registration certificate and scan the QR code on every pinna before you pay; selling without registration carries 1 to 5 years in prison.

  1. Ask for the certificate

A registered seller holds a certificate from the Deputy Commissioner's office. Ask to see it.

  2. Scan every pinna

Each legal pinna carries its own QR code. Scan it before you pay: how to check a QR code.

  3. Check the dor

Only cotton dor is legal. Metal, nylon, glass-coated and chemical string are banned, so walk away from any shop that sells them.

  4. Check the size

Kites must stay within the legal limits: no bigger than the 1.5 tawa gudda or the patang or guddi (4.5 githi).

  5. Keep the receipt

A receipt and the pinna's QR code show where your dor came from if you are ever checked.

Scan the QR code on a pinna with your phone camera before you pay. A legal pinna's code opens a record on an official Punjab government (.gov.pk) portal naming the registered manufacturer. No code, a code that will not scan, or a link to any other site means do not buy.
